Nine young men and one young woman are attending a 10 week training program for maritime cadets at the Pacific Maritime Training College in Port Moresby. After completing the 10-week program, the cadets will undertake a six-month probationary work placement on coastal vessels in PNG waters.

This is the second group of maritime cadets to be sponsored by Total E&P PNG Limited. The first group completed their training in 2016 and continue to work on shipping vessels on Purari River. The second group may benefit from similar opportunities, if the Papua LNG Project goes ahead.

Whilst attending the Pacific Maritime Training College, the cadets are living onboard a vessel owned and operated by Pacific Project Logistics (PPL) at Paga Wharf in Port Moresby. PPL will support the program by accommodating the cadets and organising their probationary work placement on vessels.

At the end of their probationary period, successful cadets will receive their General Purpose Rating 2 certificate, qualifying them as seamen to work on vessels.

10 cadets were selected after receiving 97 applications from interested youths from nine different communities along the Purari River. The screening resulted in 37 applicants being shortlisted after meeting the basic educational entry requirements.

In addition to developing local businesses and support health and education services, TOTAL and its Contractors have committed to continue to prioritise the training and employment of workers who live in project area communities in Gulf Province.
