GG Officiates New Ireland Legislative Assembly Complex Opening

The Governor General of Papua New Guinea arrived in Kavieng, New Ireland province to officially open the New Ireland Legislative Assembly complex which took place on Independence Day.

Grand Chief Sir Bob and Lady Emeline Dadae travelled to the province on Monday the 14th September 2020. They were also accompanied by former Prime Ministers Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare and Sir Rabbie Namaliu at the invitation of New Ireland Governor Chief Sir Julius Chan.

Upon their arrival the country’s founding fathers, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, Chief Sir Julius Chan and Sir Rabbie Namaliu accompanied the Governor General to Laraibina, a 90km road trip from Kavieng, to visit the world famous eels of Laraibina. From there the Governor General and the former prime ministers travelled to Madina Girls School and later to Lemakot School of Nursing.

The Governor General officiated at the opening of the New Ireland Legislative Assembly Complex on Independence Day morning and officiated at the Flag Lowering ceremony later in the afternoon. This is the first time for a Governor General to officiate at the Flag Lowering ceremony outside of Port Moresby.
