Boram CIS inmates and officers cloning cocoa

East Sepik Provincial Cocoa Research Extension Development Services visited the Boram Correctional Institution to conduct Cocoa Budding Assessment Training to inmates and the correctional officers.

This training includes Training of Trainers (ToT) for cocoa budding and also provides qualifying assessment on bud drafting.

The training defines the concept of plants propagation in term of plants genetics and its modification.

The whole aim of this cloning Exercise is to introduce preventive measures on Cocoa Pot Bora Disease affecting PNG’s cocoa industry.

Boram Correctional Institution first introduced to cocoa cloning or budding in 2018 and have to date farmed over 1000 cloned trees fully grown producing at a successful rate.

This training will equip the inmates as an integral part of their rehabilitation program and also creates revenue incentives for the prison and correctional services as a whole.

Boram CIS acknowledged the Mr Timothy Sam the Provincial Coordinator and Mr Douglas Kawasi the Liasson Extension Officer as well at the East Sepik Provincial Cocoa Research Extension Development Services for their time and effort in empowering the inmates and CIS officers with much needed agricultural knowledge.
