PNG validates its Enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions

The Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA) has convened a stakeholder’s workshop to validate Papua New Guinea’s enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) against climate change, for 2020-2030.

The 27 November validation of the NDC reflects the Government’s commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the forestry, energy and land use sectors. NDCs are a list of actions that a country intends to pursue to achieve, adapt and mitigate against the impacts of climate change.

CCDA Managing Director, Mr Ruel Yamuna, on behalf of CCDA acknowledged the support of all stakeholders and development partners and emphasised that the revision process is linked with the SDG 13 Climate Roadmap to help reach ambitious targets and contribute towards achieving the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Dr. Achala Abeysinghe, Country Representative of Global Green Growth Institute in PNG, delivering her opening remarks reemphasized GGGI’s commitment to support PNG’s rapid transition to a strong, inclusive and resilient green growth model through this enhanced NDC as well as the SDG13 Roadmap and the GCF Country Programme.

Mr Edward Vrkic, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative during his delivering remarks said: “UNDP is and will continue to proudly support the Government in these efforts. We are working with a range of development partners to further climate action, which is an issue of the utmost national interest.”

Mr. Alfred Rungol, PNG NDC National Focal point said that validating of sectoral targets prepares PNG to contribute its effort to combat and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the mitigation sector and encourage resilience in the adaptation sector.

He said this was another milestone achieved by the country to demonstrate to the global community on PNG’s national ambitions on climate actions under the Paris Agreement.

The workshop was a result of extensive consultations with stakeholders from the Government agencies, civil society and the private sector. The enhancement of the NDCs is supported by a range of development partners including NDC Partnership, the Global Green Growth Institute, UNDP, FAO, USAID Climate Ready, GIZ, IRENA, UNEP and the Australian Government.
