On Tuesday 22nd December 2020, Minister for Higher Education Research Science & Technology Hon. Wesley Raminai officially launched the online selections for 2020 Grade 12 students wishing to be selected into PNG’s higher education institutions for 2021. Upon the Minister officially clicking the selection button, official selection was made online within 32 seconds.
In his remarks, Secretary for the Department of Higher Education Research Science & Technology (DHERST) Professor Fr Jan Czuba said in comparison, the old selection system used to take about 3 to 4 weeks.
The National Online Application System (NOAS) is a digital adaptation of the paper based school leaver form (SLF) introduced in 2018. Since its introduction grade 12 school leavers in registered secondary schools have been able to create individual online accounts which ensures the students can apply for the institution and program of their choice.
NOAS has replaced the paper based SLF process and now compliments the National Online Selection System (NOSS). Using NOAS students can select 5 tertiary education programs and back up their choices based on their subject combinations.
NOAS aims at improving data efficiency, transparency and institutional accountability. NOAS also facilitates transparent and efficient common admissions into Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)
In the 2020 selections the following institutions have now on board to participate for the first time in the online selections:
- Arawa Nursing College
- UoG’s Bainik campus in the East Sepik Province
- St Barnabas School of Nursing
- Sacred Heart School of Nursing
- Mendi School of Nursing
- Western Pacific University in Ialibu, SHP
Minister Raminai stated that the digitalization of online selection is now saving the state K8.3 million annually.
Secondary School and Higher Education institutions as well as Students around the country were able to tune into the Launch virtually via Zoom and PNGBUZZ TV Live Stream.
