Many PNG streets were empty, almost every Tucker Box in Port Moresby a mini-stadium as the 2020 Australian NRL Grand Final kicked off on Sunday, with passionate Justin Olam and Melbourne Storm fans gathered around the nearest TV they could find. PNG supporters even likened the Grand Final to watching the State of Origin or a Kumuls game.

4 minutes into the game, Justin Olam, to the joy of his proud country behind him opened the scoring with winger Josh Addo-Carr passing the ball back on the inside to Olam who dived for the corner, eventually awarded a penalty try by the bunker – the first penalty try in a Grand Final since 2013.

The Storm went on to lead the Penrith Panthers 22-0 at half time.

Melbourne extended the lead to 26-0 before the Panthers put on four consecutive tries late in the second half. Although the Storm finished with two players sin-binned, Panthers could not make it in the end.

Storm defeating Penrith 26-20, earning the NRL 2020 title.

Olam finished the game with the opening try – a total seven runs and 10 tackles, capping off a blitzing season for the PNG international as the starting number 4 for the Storm.

A testament to his strong Christian faith, Olam posted via his facebook page after the win “Above everything I do and achieve, let your Name be lifted high Lord. I’m nothing without u”.

With his humble spirit and outstanding achievements, Justin now becomes even more of an inspiration to many young Papua New Guineans striving to do great not just in Rugby League but also in their careers in general.
