The PNG NRL Competition has announced that the 12 existing teams will compete for the top spot in the 2025 Digicel ExxonMobil Cup, starting in April of 2025.

After thoroughly reviewing the 2024 season and assessing the potential for expansion, it was concluded that the competition in 2025 will feature the 12 current teams.

PNG NRLC Chairman, Mr. Adrian Chow, explained that expanding the league is always a complex process. Despite the potential unpopularity of certain decisions, “the Board is committed to prioritising the best interests of the game.” He emphasised that numerous factors were considered in reaching this decision.

Mr. Chow further explained that the PNGRFL Pathways and Performance Department conducted a thorough evaluation of the current Clubs’ performance both on and off the field. They also carried out a detailed analysis of all Club applications for the 2025 competition and beyond. Mr Chow pointed out that while they are building on the success of the 2024 season and are committed to raising the competition’s standards and ensuring the sustainability of Clubs, they have concluded that this is not the right moment to expand.

They expressed gratitude to the Morobe Kandes and Simbu Warriors for their robust proposals and are committed to collaborating with them to ensure a successful future entry into the competition.

Tony Archer, the General Manager of Pathways and Performance, conveyed his appreciation by acknowledging the Clubs, their esteemed sponsors and the Board for their dedication and efforts in finalising the 12-Team competition for 2025. He noted that despite the difficulties of the process the collaborative effort is crucial in their mission to elevate the quality of the game for both the Clubs and the organisation.

Tony Archer emphasised that their main goal is to assist Clubs in developing sustainable pathways for players, coaches, and support staff. He highlighted that this approach ultimately aims to provide fans with an improved competition experience in 2025. He further noted that reaffirming the 12 Clubs establishes a consistent environment, allowing the teams to concentrate on elevating standards and enhancing development pathways for players.

Mr Archer acknowledged the challenges that potential new Clubs face today, noting that he has personally communicated with them. “They understand the particular areas that need improvement, and efforts will continue to ensure they are adequately prepared to join the competition in the future.”

Some of the teams will begin their pre-season training in the upcoming weeks as they gear up for the April 2025 kick-off. The PNG NRLC plans to release the complete schedule before Christmas.
