With heavy weights in the likes of Stanton Albert, Mark Mexico, Daniel Tapol and pocket dynamo Hobert Koim affectionately known by rugby league fans as “Whitey”, the 3rd placed PRK Mendi Muruks were certain to be a handful against the 5th place Moni Plus NCDC Port Moresby Vipers.
A well placed kick from play maker Ase Boas gave the Vipers back to back sets and Brendon Gotuno grabbed the first points of the match. With a successful conversion saw the Vipers 6 points in front five minutes into the first half.
Muruks winger Bob Tenza bustling his way from the fringes to get Muruks their first 4 pointer and a successful conversion had the teams tied up at 6 a piece 20 minutes into the game. Both teams unable to capitalize on the opportunities saw them going into halftime 6 all.
A handling error from the Vipers in the Mendi red zone saw Muruks Fullback Dickson Pipi pounce on the loose ball running almost 60 meters before sending Captain and hooker Weza Tenza to score under the posts. 10 minutes into the 2nd half. A successful coversion and the Muruks took the lead for the first time in the match 12-6
Having lost playmaker Ase Boas, the Vipers looked lost in attack as both sides threw themselves at each other until the fulltime whistle. PRK Mendi Muruks holding on to win the game 12 – 6
Despite the loss Vipers Coach Leonard Tarum was pleased with the improved performance from the boys, however noted that game management especially in attack is still lacking.
