South Sydney Rabbitohs thumped reigning premiers the Roosters in Sydney on Friday night in the Australian NRL competition’s final round of the proper season, with winger and PNG Kumul Alex Johnston bagging five amazing tries.
Johnston’s feat included the 100th of his career and is now fourth all-time on the club try scoring tally. It also made him the top tryscorer of the season with 20, one ahead of Kyle Feldt.
Johnston got off to a hot start with two first-half tries, then blitzed the Roosters with 3 more in the second half to finish with his 5-Try Haul.
Souths piled on 60 points to the Roosters 8 – the most the Bunnies have ever scored against the Roosters in their 112-year rivalry.
Cody Walker was at his best, with three try assists, two tries and two line breaks in a commanding performance.
It wasn’t that long ago that the Papua New Guinea international was on the fringe at Souths and the club was considering not re-signing him. But earlier this month the Rabbitohs locked him in for two more years.
Rabbitohs will now host Newcastle at ANZ Stadium in the first week of the finals.
