The Referendum result announced today by the Bougainville Referendum Commission (BRC) is overwhelmingly in favour of independence for Bougainville – over 97.7% of the vote.
Out of the 181,067 total ballot papers counted, 176,928 voted for independence from PNG, 3,043 voted for greater autonomy, with 1,096 Informal ballot papers.
BRC Chair Bertie Ahern congratulated the people of Bougainville on an 85% turnout, a record for PNG.
