The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Coffee Industry Corporation Ltd (CICL) and the Department of Education has made coffee the first of any cash crop that we have in PNG to have its own curriculum to be taught in schools in PNG.
Education Secretary Dr. Uke Kombra commended CIC, its partners, funders and the team of experts from CIC and the Education Department for their tireless efforts in bringing the launching of the coffee curriculum into fruition.
General Manager for CIC’s Industry Operation Division Mr. Steven Tumae acknowledged the support of the World Bank and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) through the Productive Partnerships in Agriculture Project (PPAP), for the much needed funding of the project.
Dr. Kombra congratulated CIC for taking the lead in this relevant curriculum and challenged other commodity agencies to follow suit. “The department will be working closely with our partners to roll out the coffee curriculum from grades 6-12 throughout the country.”
He said the department anticipates collaborating with other agriculture agencies to develop short-term courses in vocational and technical colleges not only for students but also for anybody who is interested.
“We can break up what is in this coffee curriculum book that can be relevant for anyone to address the Small-to-Medium-Enterprises (SMEs). I appeal to CIC to work towards the development of short-term courses for general members of our society apart from students in schools.”
