The National Federation of Teqball has been voted in as a member of the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee at the PNGOC Annual General Assembly held on Saturday 26th June 2021.
Despite the sport’s recent establishment in the PNG, TeqPNG had applied for membership to the National Olympic Committee after fulfilling all of the requirements of membership, including having a constitution, a strategic plan and being a certified association registered with the Investment Promotion Authority.
TeqPNG serves as the domestic governing body, promoting and controlling the game of teqball in Papua New Guinea as played under FITEQ Rules.
According to Wikipedia, Teqball is a ball sport that is played on a curved table, combining elements of football and table tennis. Back and forth, the players hit a football with any part of the body except arms and hands. Teqball can be played between two players as a singles game, or between four players as a doubles game.
The game is represented at an international level by the International Federation of Teqball (FITEQ). A number of world-class footballers have been attracted by the game, and after being added to the programmes for the 2021 Asian Beach Games and the 2023 European Games, the sport is now aiming for Olympic inclusion.
TeqPNG’s membership to the PNGOC, comes after it became a recognised national federation with the international federation responsible for teqball, FITEQ at the FITEG world general assembly in 2020. TeqPNG is one of 114 teqball national federations from around the world and one of seven within the Oceania region.
The next target for TeqPNG is to stage its first tournament which it will be doing in July. Clubs and those interested in playing or supporting teqball can get in touch with TeqPNG through their social media pages or email teqpng@gmail.com.
