Women’s National Soccer League set to return

Competitive women’s football is set to return to the field in October straight after the men’s competition ends.

Papua New Guinea Football Association President John Kapi Natto said, the revival of the women’s elite competition is a positive step forward to promote gender equality as one of FIFA’s pillars.

“We are keen to ensure gender balance is achieved and given priority after years of neglect, he said.

“Papua New Guinea women’s team is the current holders of the Pacific Games gold medal and with a lot of female youth players coming through the rank, it is important to create a sustainable pathway to a higher competition as the pinacle of women’s football.

“The return of the Women’s League is also timely for our women to prepare for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup,” Kapi Natto said.

The Women’s League has been on hiatus but Kumul Petroleum NSL acting manager Dimirit Mileng is relieved and looking forward to its return.

“There has been great interest among the women and silently wishing for a Kumul Petroleum Women’s NSL to provide an alternative football competition that is gender equal, he said.

“These are hugely exciting times for female football as FIFA has now embraced and prioritised women in having the same opportunity as the men,” added Mileng.

PNGFA have put together a Women’s Football Committee to assist drive the concept and women’s football development officer Margaret Aka has been assigned to assist the Committee moving forward.

Mileng said the full team of the Committee Membership will be announced once the members meet.

The expression of interest opens on September 2 and closes on the 25 September. Interested clubs requesting for EOI should email; m.aka@pngfootball.com.pg, nsl@pngfootball.com.pg or footballassociationpng@yahoo.com.

“We are looking at starting with twelve teams, six in Lae and Port Moresby respectively, but it will all depend on the number of teams expressing interest, said Mileng.
