Selections for the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea (BFPNG) Senior National team trials are underway at the Sir John Guise indoor complex over the weekend. Selection trials a few weeks back in Lae, Morobe Province where BFPNG’s National Selectors led by Acting Coach Boyet Daroya (for men) and Head Coach Moi Muri (for women) traveled to Lae on 3rd December for the trials and Goroka in the Eastern Highlands.
Speaking to PNGBUZZ TV, BFPNG Executive Director Nick Daroa said players from clubs and associations in and around Port Moresby and as far as Kikori travelled to the nation’s capital for the trials:
Kikori Basketball Association led by their newly elected President Ella Dodobai who is also the former town mayor and representing 288 playing Association led a 30 strong roster on a 8 hour dinghy trip followed by a 6 hour truck trip from Kerema to Port Moresby to participate in the BFPNG Senior National team trials.
Fiji has been named as the host of the 2021 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Melanesia Cup, which will serve as a qualifier for the 2023 Pacific Games.
The top two teams in the tournament will secure automatic qualification to the Pacific Games.
FIBA said Pacific Games hosts the Solomon Islands may earn a host qualification spot, subject to a decision by the governing body based on the performance of the country’s national federation.
The 2017 FIBA Melanesia Cup saw hosts Papua New Guinea win the inaugural men’s and women’s titles.
