Communities in Kokoda in the Northern Province and Balimo in the Western Province will have access to solar lighting under the PNG-Australia partnership’s Pawarim Komuniti “Light for Learning” project.

Around 3,860 solar home systems will be distributed to 44 villages in these two provinces, with a focus on supporting student learning. The solar systems will be provided for households, schools, aid posts, community centres and churches in the catchment areas of Kokoda and Balimo colleges run by the Kokoda Track Foundation (KTF).

2,539 units will be installed in communities in Western and 1,321 in Northern to support students of Balimo and Kokoda Colleges. The solar systems will provide light and charging capabilities. Students will be able to study after dark and charge their tablets, which they use to study when not on college campus.

Pawarim Komuniti supports access to clean energy in rural and remote communities in Papua New Guinea. It’s funded by the #PNGAusPartnership as part of Australia’s commitment under the PNG Electrification Partnership to help PNG meet its electrification targets.
