US commits K4.2m to help PNG response

US Ambassador Erin McKee made a significant announcement today, as the U.S. government committed nearly K4.2 million ($1.2 million) to help Papua New Guinea in its COVID-19 response.

“Today, I am honored to announce a U.S. government commitment of nearly 4.2 million PGK (USD 1.2 million), which will be split evenly between the WHO and UNICEF to help Papua New Guinea in its COVID-19 response.” Ambassador McKee said.

The assistance will help the Government of PNG prepare laboratory systems, activate case-finding and event-based surveillance, support rapid response and preparedness efforts, develop risk communication campaigns, and implement infection prevention and control measures. In addition, the U.S. government has committed $2.3 million to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Pacific Islands region.
