The PNG Special Parliamentary Committee on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) met today to plot out their work plan for the year, with a strong commitment to using their parliamentary powers to draw attention to the best ways PNG can address GBV across the country.

MP Charles Abel chaired (via a phone link up due to COVID-19 restrictions) with Deputy Chair Governor Allan Bird and Governor Powes Parkop making up a quorum.

The first national summit on ending gender-based violence took place in November 2020 in Port Moresby reflecting on the growing momentum to stop all forms of gender, sexual and family violence.

The Committee will now work on their schedule of public hearings, so they can use their powers to hold officials to account for preventing, responding to, investigating and prosecuting GBV wherever it occurs.
