Sea Women of Melanesia team in need of support

There are currently a group of women who are working in a very remote part of PNG with limited resources, doing vital reef surveys in a region of outstanding marine biodiversity using only a dugout canoe.

Lorie Pipiga and the Sea Women of Melanesia team at Ferguson Island in Milne Bay have been hard at work documenting the coral bleaching in the area around the Nua Marine Reserve Network.

The eastern Coral Triangle (PNG and Solomon Islands) is currently experiencing the most severe, region-wide bleaching event in the last 15 years and the team of Sea Women are in the field documenting the situation.

From their findings as reported by the Coral Sea Foundation, the bleaching appears only moderate and they hope coral mortality will be limited and the reef will recover over the cooler winter months.

The need for a small dinghy and outboard motor is crucial for their work to be done safely and more effectively, and they are appealing to the general public and business community for assistance.

The Sea Women of Melanesia program empowers indigenous women with scuba diving and marine science skills so they can take an active role in creating and monitoring marine protected areas on their own coral reefs.

This program supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals of Gender Equality, Sustainable Communities, Climate Action, and Life Below Water.

For any donations in supporting the work of the Sea Women and the people of PNG can be done through coralseafoundation.net
