Kimbe over the weekend held the PNG Air sponsored West New Britain Provincial Championships at the Sasindran Muthuvel Stadium. Despite the disruptions to training caused by Covid19 restrictions, the athletics program in the province led by Coach Wilson Malana has been very active, with a number of weekly competitions having already been held.
With the support of Athletics PNG and its sponsor PNG Air the WNB athletes played host to 15 National and Development squad athletes flying in from East New Britain, Simbu, Goroka, Port Moresby and Lae.
This included three NSI sponsored development squad athletes who will travelled from Goroka. PNG’s own photo finish expert George Moramoro on hand to provide fully automatic timing, the national athletes will be looking forward to seeing where they are with the National Championships only three weeks away.
Highlights from Saturday’s action in the men’s mens 100m final saw Emmanuel Anis 10.695 and Pom based Leroy Kamau 10.699 Difference between first and second 4/1000ths of a second.
In the men’s 400m final saw Benjamin Aliel overcoming Daniel Baul in the home straight to win in 48.46 seconds.
Eldan Toti recording a 6.94m jump showing great form in the long jump followed closely by Steven Ray with 6.80m
Monica Kalua, Siune Kagl and Israel Takap all showing very good form in the 1500m and 3000m races
Athletics PNG President Tony Green congratulated the WNB association for its efforts in putting on this important championships at this time and thanked the West New Britain Provincial Authorities for their support.
