Women’s football has been growing steadily in PNG for some time, but the code has been lacking in women referees. Women referees and the development of their skills is now being addressed in order to meet the ever-increasing demand and standards of the game.
Thirty two Papua New Guinea female referees successfully completed a five-day FIFA MA Elite Women’s Referee course online at Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) Academy in Lae last week.
The Online FIFA MA Elite Women’s Referee course was conducted by Kevin Stoltenkemp (OFC Head of Refereeing), Neil Poloso (OFC Referee Development Officer), Rakesh Varman (OFC Instructor) and Alejo Perez Leguizamon (OFC Fitness Instructor).
The online course was intensive just as the regular in-person seminars and topics covered changes to the Laws of the Game, refereeing technique, control of the game and tactical system of play (reading of the game).
The FIFA women’s elite referee course was timely as PNGFA will have their Women’s National Soccer League set to start next weekend.
