Coates to join Melbourne Storm

The Melbourne Storm NRL Club have announced that PNG Kumul and current Brisbane Bronco Xavier Coates will be moving to Melbourne next season.

The 20-year-old confirmed the move to his Brisbane teammates on Saturday after the Broncos’ 19-18 loss to the Cowboys. The multi-year deal with the Storm is said to be worth $500,000 a season and will see the youngster remain at the Storm until the end of 2023.

Melbourne Storm’s long-time General Manager, Frank Ponissi, speaking highly of Coates stated the potential Xavier has already shown as one of the best young wingers in the game, being just 20 years of age and that the club is looking forward to developing him more.

Born in PNG, Coates represented the Kumuls in a Test against Samoa a month before making his NRL debut in 2019 and has already played 24 matches for Brisbane scoring 14 tries. His 2021 campaign has already seen the karu bag eight tries in the opening nine rounds of the season, and his representative career continued with two State of Origin appearances for Queensland, including two tries in the series victory last year.

Coates will most likely replace Josh-Addo Carr, who is headed to the Bulldogs for 2022, which potentially sees an explosive Olam-Coates combination at the Storm for next season.
