Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League Chief Executive Office Reatau Rau has submitted his resignation to the PNGRFL Board.

Rau in a statement said that he verbally advised the PNGRFL Board of his intention to step down at its September meeting in Port Moresby.

“I had a one on one chat with Chairman Sandis Tsaka last Friday (October 23, 2020) that it was mutually agreed for the good of the game, time to move on,” Rau said.

Mr Rau also thanked all the staff/employees of the PNGRFL at the Head office, Program Managers, PNGLNG Kumuls Coaching staff, the SP PNG Hunters Coaching staff, Oil Search PNG Orchids Coaching staff, the board of PNGNRLC and the twelve Franchise clubs and Sponsors, for their invaluable support to me close to 4 years period.

He said, the game has grown into a credible institution as evidence by the sponsors and partners built over the years. Resigning as CEO was in the best interest for him personally and the game.

PNGRFL Chairman Sandis Tsaka acknowledged receiving the CEOs resignation in writing whilst acknowledging his many years of service to the game as a volunteer and as CEO of the PNGRFL for the last four (4) years.

“The CEO’s resignation letter was presented to the PNGRFL Board yesterday which accepted his resignation. On behalf of the PNGRFL and our rugby league family, I take this opportunity to thank him for the many years of service to the PNGRFL and the sport”, Tsaka said.

The Chairman acknowledged it was a challenging time for the organisation. “I want to particularly commend him for your stewardship of the organisation and the sacrifices he and all the staff have had to make during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been especially challenging for us all”, said Tsaka.

He said Rau was appointed CEO in January 2017 following the termination of his predecessor Bob Cutmore in October 2016. Rau’s three-year term expired in January 2020 however he was appointed to continue whilst the PNGRFL restructure was in progress and also due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Chairman said in the interim the PNGRFL Board has appointed the PNGNRLC Competitions Manager, Mr. Stanley Hondina as Acting CEO to take over from Mr. Rau until a permanent appointment is made.

Mr. Rau will formally hand over the reigns to Mr. Hondina as acting CEO on Monday 2nd November 2020.
