Papua New Guinea Independence Day approaching and there’s so much activity happening around the country and abroad to mark this occasion.
Sport is and for the most part a vehicle of choice to promote independence celebrations with intent to spread messages reiterating past and present achievements and the way forward.
National Rugby League Competition the Digicel Cup ended it’s 18 weeks with the Grand Final on Sunday 8 September 2019. The Snax Tigers and Kroton Wigmen put on an entertaining game for a sold out Oil Search National Football Stadium. The Tigers experience seeing them take command in the final quarter to secure a third title with a dominant 15-4 win. The bold Wigmen, young and ambitious will be better from the experience.
The Bank of South Pacific (BSP) continue to support sport in PNG and particularly junior development. POM Racquets club were the recipients of a K20,000 sponsorship which reaffirms their affiliation with this organisation.
POM Racquets has made small but progressive increments towards growing interest in the sport and is building relationships with schools interested in giving their children a great opportunity to learn individual skills as well as promoting a work-play balance.
Shout out to our PNGDF Rugby team representing PNG at the Defence Force Rugby Tourney in Tokyo, Japan. The men started the comp on tuesday and I’m sure will embrace the opportunity to personally and professionally develop through their interactions. A great time to get out of the proverbial comfort zone and forge new networks.
I’ve briefly highlighted two sports making traction and using these as markers to show the development phases. Sport through schools and sport through the opportunity to build team unity, structures and networks through existing and solid institutions such as the PNGDF.
Sport is a demonstration and denominator to develop and build many personal and collective attributes.
Let’s embrace these as a reward to learn and participate as well as take on the arising issues within our space and communities to address and find solutions moving forward.
Whatever sport or activity you’re on to this weekend, play fair and play safe.
Happy 44th Independence, God Bless PNG! 🇵🇬
PNG em mi ya! 🇵🇬
