Safe access to clean water for Southern Highlands communities

For the women and children in rural communities of the Highlands, access to clean water is a challenge and at times dangerous when the source is within close proximity of tribal boundaries.

Access to portable water was identified by community members highlighting that installing water points closer to the hamlets would reduce vulnerability to violence, particularly among women and youths, as accessing water from afar poses potential security risks especially when the water source is on another tribe’s land.

Funded by the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund; Semin, Kumin, Humbra-Topa, Pomberel and Daga-Pimaga communities in the Southern Highlands can now have access to clean drinking water within the safety of their hamlets under the Community Peace for Development Plans carried out by International Organization for Migration in PNG or IOM-PNG.
