The ICCC continues to fine retail outlets for price increases allowed five per cent mark, violating the National Emergency Order No.19.

In East New Britain province, the ICCC carried out awareness at seventy-nine retail outlets located at Kokopo, Rabaul, Kerevat, Waragoi, Nonga and Toma.

Prices of items sold were collected and retail managers were advised not to increase prices during the State of Emergency period.

ICCC Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Paulus Ain said most of the retail outlets have complied with the Emergency Order. 19 except for two shops in Kokopo, namely Papindo Trading Co. Ltd and K-Central Ltd.

“On the 20th May, Papindo Trading was served seven infringement notices for being in breach of the Order 19 by increasing the prices of seven items above the allowed margin of five per cent increase. On the 1st June, a second trader, K-Central Ltd, was served an infringement notice for increasing the price of a bale of 1kg roots rice.”

K-Central has since paid the fine of K5,000.00 to the ICCC.

“Today, our team has identified Top Brat Trading Ltd in Kokopo to have increased the price of 5 kg HS Star Rice above the allowed mark up of five per cent, hence they will be served an infringement notice as well.” Mr. Ain said.

“According to the National Emergency Order No.19, the price of these goods should not be increased more than the 5 per cent mark otherwise a spot fine penalty fee of K5, 000.00 is imposed by the ICCC.”

Mr Ain also added that if retail outlets needed to increase the price of goods during the State of Emergency period above five per cent then they should have first sought the approval of the ICCC.
