The “Light Up Popondetta Town Initiative” under the Vision 2050 to light up rural Papua New Guinea is now moving into its third phase.
The first outstation to be lit up outside of Popondetta is the main Oro Bay highway from Beama/Afore junction to the Orowood/Marine Base, Oro Bay LLG.
This will be a first of its kind development for the people in those areas and for the first time will enjoy the lights along the main road once the installation is completed by TAG Energy. They are expecting the shipment to arrive on the 25th of August and installation of the Solar Street Lights should commence soon after.
The program will encourage the rural communities in Oro Bay to increase domestic trading (MSME) activities and at the same time ensure women, children and the elderly move freely under the protection of the street lights.
More funding under this initiative and will be announced very soon when Tufi, Ajoa and Wanigela Stations will be lit up under this basic but very important initiative. This is a progressive development under the district’s 5 year development strategy. In 2021 they will extend the program to cover Safia and Afore stations.
