Kokonas Indastri Koporesen (KIK) completed a successful week of training to technical officers involved in coconut farming on White Copra production, marketing, coconut breeding, farming systems, sanitation and downstream processing at Stewart Coconut Research Station in Murnas, Madang Province. This week will now be seeing farmers from all the copra producing districts in Madang be put through the training of producing White Copra.
Despite the lack of support or interest given or shown by Madang’s leadership and administration, local farmers have turned up and after almost a century of producing black copra there is new found hope of yielding a better income with the introduction of producing white copra.
A local farmer is urging the provincial government and the locally elected leaders to promote and work with such initiatives that will encourage locals to work the land and hopes Madang can also follow in the example already taken by East New Britain and Milne Bay province.
