Pom Nature Park continues internship program

Port Moresby Nature Park continues to offer university students in biology, environmental science and similar fields into its yearly internship program. The program allows students to get a hands on experience where varieties of plants and animals are already available.

Nature Park’s Wildlife Manager, Ishimu Bebe, has been taking in interns since 2016 says, the program gives students a head start in experiencing the working environment.

“Mostly for four years they do theory and few field trips but we want to provide a platform where they can apply the skills they have learnt in their classrooms.”

Into its fifth year, the program has seen many students from University of Papua New Guinea, Pacific Adventist University, University of Technology and the University of Natural Resources & Environment. There are 3 students undergoing the internship program with the Wildlife Department and are due to complete this program next month.

The park compliments their studies in the sense that if they want to broaden their knowledge on different species of plants and animals, this is the right place. It also gives them the foundational knowledge on which stream they’d like to go into on the near future. These plants and animals we have here are native to our country and as much as possible we want to have more Papua New Guineans to understand and work within their own environment.

The Park has also been able to provide employment opportunities to those university students who have excelled during their internship period.
