PNG Health workers who will be engaged in the roll-out of the vaccine were trained today on how to safely administer the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. Australia is assisting PNG in its COVID-19 response efforts, including urgently establishing a vaccination clinic for PNG health workers in NCD.
WHO, UNICEF and National Department of Health have also reached out to the Port Moresby General Hospital to formalise their agreement to participate in the vaccination roll-out in NCD.
AUSMAT members were at the Port Moresby General Hospital over the weekend, consulting with health workers and officials. Looking at the emerging needs for the hospital to be better equipped to deal with an increase in patients presenting with COVID-19 were part of the discussions.
Port Moresby General Hospital is PNG’s largest hospital and is playing a leading role in PNG’s COVID-19 response. As part of the package of support, the Australian Government is supplying Port Moresby General Hospital with PPE and hospital tent facilities to allow for safe triaging and referral and transfer of patients. Part of their support is also allowing for the re-opening of the Rita Flynn Testing and Isolation Facility to relieve pressure on Port Moresby General Hospital.
