PNGBUZZ Rugby League Round Review: May 30

By our PNGBUZZ Rugby League Expert

A round of upsets from the Digicel Cup to the NRL and the PNG Hunters breaking this years drought at home to get their first win, while Edene Gebbie ran for two hundred plus metres against Nixon Putts North Devils.

Intrust Super Cup

PNG Hunters 24 defeated Souths Logan Magpies 22

This was surely the round the Hunters would bag their first win at home a battle of the bottom placing of which the Hunters reigned superior. Marum opting for first-time combination with his halves pairing in Nicky Hasu and Justin Yoka and fullback Terry Wapi whose debut as Hunter 82 was a Man of the Match performance.

Gahuna Sailas showed cause for his further consideration with his experienced run’s and aggressive defense. All out a gusty effort from both teams and the display was covenant enough to know why both languish at the bottom. Missed opportunities, uncharacteristic errors and at times poor discipline. Hunters good for this weekend and more-so a good trial run for another test this weekend at Redcliffe.

Lahanis defeated Gurias 28 -14 in Goroka, Hela Wigmen upset the Eagles in Mt Hagen 14-4. Enga Mioks finally stole a win from the high flying Tumbe 16-10 in Wabag while in Lae the Tigers mauled the hapless Dabari 38 -12 and Kimbe, the Cutters made history with a 15-14 win over the tumultuous Muruks for the first win this year.

Last but not least was the Gulf Isou and Port Moresby Vipers. The local derby, which failed to pull a  crowd was an absolute debacle. For the Second week in row the Gulf Isou have been aided to victory by atrocious refereeing. The referee lacked control and at times showed little concern for additional aid from his touch judges which thus contradicted his knowledge of game rules.  His choice in communicating in English was a definite hindrance opting to use this medium opposed to Tok Pisin, which is the lingua franca of all! This would have served him and the game better. Can we please have someone look into the standard of refereeing? It’s embarrassing.

Till next time.
