Mt Ulawun in West New Britain, known as one of the world’s most hazardous volcanoes, began spewing ash on Wednesday morning at about 8am. Authorities have issued an eruption warning and evacuations are well underway.
The volcano had been showing signs of increased activity for the past few weeks. Many living around the base of Mt Ulawun, which is about a five-hour drive away from the Kimbe, have been evacuated.
Air Niugini flights to Hoskins Airport have been suspended pending a risk assessment to be carried out this morning.
The WNB provincial disaster team have been sent to the area.
