Lisa’s Jolly Reading Club of Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province will host its second annual Spelling Bee this Sunday 2nd of July 2023 at the Hotel Phoenix in Goroka starting 12noon.
A spelling bee is a competition in which contestants are asked to spell a broad selection of words, usually with a varying degree of difficulty. To compete, contestants must memorise the spellings of words as written in dictionaries and recite them accordingly (Wikipedia).
According to Ms Sapu, the Founder and Director of Lisa’s Jolly Reading Club and the integrated Lisa’s Jolly Learning Centre, Lisa’s Jolly Reading Club came up with the initiative of this spelling bee to help promote the love of reading books in little children. The idea is to get the children to read as many books as possible and get them to understand different words and their meanings and learn how to spell these words correctly which will in turn enrich their vocabulary as they speak.
“Due to the decreasing level of comprehension skills and poor English performance in primary schools, the Lisa’s Jolly Reading Club is hoping for it to be an ongoing annual event to help all primary aged children from grades 3 to 8 to value learning and see it as a fun and enjoyable experience. We also want to encourage these young children to work hard to become team players in raising the flag of Literacy in our Province Eastern Highlands.”
The spelling bee on Sunday will see a total of fifteen (15) students ranging from grades 3 to 8 contesting each other in spelling their ‘test words’ in this fun, sociable, exciting and learning experience.
Primary school students taking part in this year’s spelling bee will be representing Goroka Grammar, North Goroka, Kama Adventist Primary School, Mesiquashi Early Childhood Centre, Goroka Christian Academy, and Goroka International School.
One of the main reasons behind involving different schools in Eastern Highlands to participate in the spelling bee is to forge friendships amongst school students and promote unity within the school communities in the province.
This spelling bee is a fundraising event to help Ms Sapu and her Jolly Reading Club and Learning Center raise funds to purchase the Jolly Phonics school kit to advance their reach and help teach children how to read fluently.
Ms Sapu is planning to build a small library to cater only for children and is looking to expand her Jolly Phonics library from what she currently has at Lisa’s Jolly Learning Centre.
“I do not have land at the moment. I’m operating within my parents’ yard and that’s why I’m doing this fundraising to help me find a small space hopefully in town so the reading club can be accessible to children who come as far from outside villages.”
Lisa’s Jolly Reading Club are thankful to their sponsors; Tourism Promotion Authority, Bank of South Pacific, Shaggymo Service Station, Goroka Aerotech, Niugini Highlands Coffee and PNG Jolly Phonics, who have come on board this year to support this spelling bee event.
Ms Sapu said; “Last year was a trial and error for us. We had a total of ten (10) students from five participating schools: Okiufa Primary School, Kama Adventist Primary School, Goroka Grammar School, Hagen Christian Academy and Goroka International School. Our sponsors who helped us in some cash and kind donations were: K92 Mining Ltd, Monitor Coffee, Bulldogs Hardware, LNM Services, Niugini Highlands Coffee, and Goroka Lodge.”
Lisa’s Jolly Reading Club offers private tutorials, 1 on 1 sessions, homeschooling for preschool-age kids, 40 minutes of after school hours sessions, 1-hour Sunday sessions, and school holiday programs to help any children in the Eastern Highlands Province who may need help with their reading or for any young children that may be looking to embark on their learning ‘how to read’ journey.
“We incorporate Jolly Phonics classes with Language and Literature. The reading club is different, it covers more on different levels of Jolly Phonics and focuses on creating fluent readers and writers in English and can help to raise their comprehension level.”
Jolly Phonics is a fun and child-centred approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics. Phonics involves identifying specific symbols that represent the pronunciation of a letter within a word whereas Jolly Phonics is a fun, multisensory programme which introduces pupils to 42 letter sounds parallel to their learning of 26 letters English alphabet which is very motivating for children. Jolly Phonics is a programme that teaches not only phonics but spelling, punctuation, and grammar too.
“I am currently studying up at the University of Goroka doing 3rd year in Educational Psychology to help me further research on how best we can push through the Jolly phonics program into all primary schools to help raise students’ literacy levels and help also decrease the number of dropouts at year 8 and 10.”
Ms Sapu is looking forward to venturing into the local districts to carry forward her Jolly Phonics reading sessions and therefore needs the school kits, and technical resources such as a projector, laptop, and tablets in order to accomplish her goals and implement the successful and also rewarding reading programs she anticipates creating.
“I would like to make a call out to the local level government of Goroka and our governor and members of parliament of all districts in my province to see the importance of this Jolly Phonics program and help Lisa’s Jolly Reading Club bring this very important Program into existence into our province to help increase the number of children from Goroka, EHP to make it into every tertiary institution from Year 12. It is my plea.”
“The Reading Club is ready to do mobile programs throughout the districts and also host the spelling bee competition in all local districts as well.”
Any person or business houses who are willing to assist Ms Sapu in this worthy fundraising drive are kindly urged to contact her at Lisa’s Jolly Reading Club in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province.

Thanks for the sensible critique. Me and my neighbor were just preparing to do some research on this. We got a grab a book from our area library but I think I learned more from this post. I’m very glad to see such fantastic information being shared freely out there.
