PNG Women’s coach Frederica Sakette and assistant Margaret Aka got down to business this week in their final preparations before the team leaves for the Pacific Games in Samoa next month.
“The preparation has been going really well,” said assistant coach Aka. “The players are working hard and with the full team together it’s easier to work with everyone.
“We have 23 players in this final two-week camp in Port Moresby, which kicked off last Monday where the players have been put through their paces in fitness drills and a handful of field training sessions.”
Aka’s main focus last week was on attacking and defending to see where the players are and what need’s improvement, as well as what they need to do on their own. This week the focus will be on set pieces and positional play.
Aka added that the team is very balanced in terms of positions and they have enough players to cover each other, however admitted that it will be a massive task for them, especially knowing that Fiji is in their pool.
“Fiji beat us 5-1 in the OFC Nations Cup semifinal in New Caledonia last year and they’ll be looking forward to repeat that again but we are preparing hard to be on top against them.”
Sakette and Aka have brought in veteran Deslyn Siniu to provide her leadership and support to the younger girls, along with US-based Lucy Maino to boost their campaign.
“The atmosphere in the camp has been positive, everyone coordinating well and talking to each other, encouraging each other so that’s a good sign that we have a team that can play together as a team when it comes to game time,” Aka said.
The aim of the team is to defend their title as the football queens of the Pacific and return with gold.

Talking to ::19216801 is… nice, and all Talking to fe80::11ad:e5eb:8b23:695a just plain sucks, though Why they thought that kind of addressing was at all ergonomic is a flat-out mysteryAnd that’s before getting into the fact that every interface has multiple IPv6 addresses… UghYeah, they could have done so much better There is definitely a reason that IPv6 adoption is so damn slow, even though we do actually need it (or something like it) for the future…
