As volcanic ash continues to fall and grow in intensity since the Mt Ulawun eruption on Wednesday, West New Britain provincial disaster officials are working hard to evacuate around 15,000 people in East Nakanai. More than 100,000 people have now been affected in the local area.
Manam Island volcano has also erupted and authorities are now stretched to provide urgent assistance to all the affected communities.
Both Air Niugini and PNG Air have announce suspensions of flights into the affected areas until further notice.
Support is being provided by the Provincial and National governments, and Prime Minister James Marape said the PNGDF would be deployed to assist in the relief work.
