PNG Orchids captain Elsie Albert will join St George Illawarra for the upcoming NRLW season in Australia.
Albert is the first player from the PNG domestic competition to be signed by an NRLW club, and joins the squad along with Jillaroos Steph Hancock and Isabelle Kelly, tri-international Mahalia Murphy and fellow rugby sevens representative Georgia Page among the new faces in the Dragons squad.
After joining Souths Logan Magpies in Brisbane to play alongside Australian-based Orchids Amelia Kuk, Therese Aiton and Shae De La Cruz, Albert played alongside Jillaroo Hancock and turned down other NRLW oppportunities to continue their front-row partnership, now with the Dragons.
Dragons coach Daniel Lacey said Albert was an “out-and-out trailblazer for women’s sport in Papua New Guinea” and added, “She has had a lot of obstacles and hurdles thrown her way over the years but now she can safely say she’s the first Papua New Guinean native to earn an NRLW contract.”
The highly passionate PNG community can now rally behind yet another great Rugby League talent in Elsie Albert, now a St George Illawarra Dragon.
